What does ADS have to show after 12 years of rebranding? Could it be that we have become comfortable? How do we cultivate a positive mindset and remain self-aware, constantly examining our thoughts? How have we navigated through the years behind us? How do we develop resilience to bounce back from setbacks, even amidst a shifting environment and dwindling financial resources, especially considering that it’s only been about three years since COVID? How do we shift our landscape to ensure we live dignified and fulfilling lives? These were key questions posed by The Most Rev’d Dr. Jackson Ole Sapit during his opening remarks and devotional sharing.
The keynote speech by Irungu Houghton, Country Director of Amnesty International, demonstrated that the role of advocacy is not for the fainthearted. We must be ready and willing to pay the price; this is what God is calling us to do. Mr. Irungu Houghton brought up very provocative issues. He raised the context of our meeting, discussing the planet’s environmental catastrophes and the rising cost of living, not only in our country but beyond.
He spoke about a society polarized by identity-based discrimination and gender-based violence. He also posed an important question: How many of our leaders, especially people of the cloth, are active on digital platforms like TikTok and others? Where can we influence the majority of our young people? It was noted that people need to support Gen Z, even in their moments of hopelessness. We must guard against viewing our actions as merely releasing pressure on the government, allowing them to opt out. That is not an option. We must engage actively with regional and national advocacy campaigns and uphold a zero-tolerance stance towards corruption. This is just a glimpse of the keynote address.
We must not forget the crucial role played by our funding partners. We must be ready and willing to pay the price that God is calling us to pay. John, 10:10: “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
The 5th Symposium was attended by ADS members and their funding partners from across the regions. The session was rich in knowledge exchange, highlighted by various presentations and the gallery walk.
