Because of your help, Laureen Luyayi can now get to class, move around the school compound, and comfortably attend her lessons. She is truly grateful.
13 km from our regional offices, 3km off Mumias Road, we meet Ms. Laureen Luyayi in Emulundu Junior Secondary School, Kakamega County. Today, her face shines, a stark contrast to our last visit when her friends had to help her move from one spot to another. Her eyes say it all: “I am thankful.” Calm, composed, and soft-spoken, Laureen is a girl whose quiet strength speaks volumes.

Laureen is one of the participants who received an electric wheelchair through the SUSTFARM project, funded by WHH and implemented by ADS Western. Kakamega’s terrain is hilly and rough, especially in Emulundu. Before this support, life was tough for Laureen. Each day was a struggle she couldn’t get to school or anywhere else without someone physically pushing her.
Now, the electric wheelchair has transformed her life. It’s more than just a mobility aid; it has restored her dignity and independence. Laureen, a Grade 7 pupil, dreams of becoming a doctor one day. Despite her challenges, her eyes light up when she talks about her favourite subjects, English and Mathematics. Studying, she says, gives her purpose and hope for the future.
The wheelchair takes an entire day to charge, which Laureen usually does over the weekend. A full charge lasts about two weeks, letting her move freely throughout her school days.
Mr. Jason Amayi, one of Laureen’s teachers and patron of the school’s 4K Club, shared his gratitude:

“Laureen is so much better now. Before the wheelchair, she depended on others for even the smallest movements. This support has made her life easier and given her a chance to be like other children.”
Because of your kindness, Laureen can smile again. She can chase her dreams with confidence. You’ve not only helped her move you’ve given her hope. Thank you for standing with her.
