The Healing Power of African Leafy Vegetables- Papa’s Managu Story from Eden Sinoko-Bungoma County

Ancient leafy vegetables like Managu, Terere, Kunde, and Saga have quietly fed generations. They were the pride of our grandmothers’ kitchens, loved for their rich taste and healing qualities. Somewhere along the line, they were pushed aside for exotic vegetables like cabbages and kales. But slowly, people are waking up to the truth, these indigenous vegetables are more than just food; they are medicine, culture, and a pathway to sustainable farming.

In Bungoma,  Eden Sinoko Group, we met Simon Papa, or simply “Papa” as everyone calls him. His story is a perfect example of how African Leafy Vegetables especially Managu, can transform a person’s health and livelihood.

When Papa ushers us into his neat, vibrant farm, the first thing you notice is how calm and grounded he is. Rows of bananas sway in the breeze, but our eyes are drawn to the vertical garden bags overflowing with green Managu leaves. He pauses, runs his hand gently over the leaves, and says, “Nilikuwa na shida ya ulcers. Sukuma wiki ilikua inanichokesha, lakini tangu nianze kutumia hizi mboga za kienyeji, sijasikia hiyo shida tena.”

For years, Papa struggled with ulcers. The conventional sukuma wiki worsened his condition, but when he switched to indigenous vegetables like Managu, the sharp pains and discomfort eased. This isn’t just a personal tale. Researchers have found that African leafy vegetables are rich in compounds like flavonoids, alkaloids, and antioxidants. These natural chemicals don’t just nourish the body; they actively promote gut health, reduce inflammation, and help manage chronic conditions like ulcers, diabetes, and hypertension.

Papa is intentional about how he grows his crops. He avoids chemical fertilizers and pesticides, relying instead on compost manure he prepares on the farm. He proudly tells us that his vegetables are grown purely organic, with no trace of DAP or other synthetic inputs. This method keeps his vegetables nutrient-dense and safe while improving the health of his soil.

Nutritionally, these indigenous vegetables are a goldmine. They’re packed with vitamins A and C, iron, calcium, and dietary fiber. Unlike the commercial greens, ALVs offer a concentrated dose of micronutrients that are essential for immunity, strong bones, and overall vitality. They are low in calories but incredibly rich in the kind of nutrients that fight malnutrition and hidden hunger, issues that continue to plague many rural communities.

As we talk about his cooking routine, Papa laughs softly and says, “Hizi mboga hazihitaji mambo mingi.” He harvests them fresh from his kitchen garden, washes them thoroughly, plucks the leaves, chops them into sizes he prefers, then boils them lightly. A pinch of salt, and the dish is ready. Simple. Honest. Delicious. He enjoys them best with ugali, but he’s also aware that vegetables alone won’t sustain his body’s protein needs. That’s why he keeps chickens for eggs and occasionally slaughters one for meat. You can see the glow on his face; his health is not a theory but a practical, lived reality.

Farming, for Papa, is a family affair. His wife and children are his partners in every task, from composting to harvesting. Beyond vegetables, Papa has a flourishing banana plantation and is preparing to venture into fish farming and tomato production. Seed multiplication is another activity he takes pride in. After every season, he selects the best seeds from his crops for replanting, while selling the surplus to his neighbors. It’s his way of ensuring that the Eden Sinoko community stays self-reliant and doesn’t have to depend on expensive seeds from outside.

What stands out in Papa’s farm is not just the produce but the philosophy behind it. His farming approach aligns with what is now globally known as the “slow food” movement, a conscious, respectful way of growing, preparing, and eating food that values tradition, sustainability, and health. Unlike fast foods or chemically dependent farming, slow food honors time-tested practices and connects people back to their land and heritage.

Agroforestry is another practice Papa is passionate about. By integrating trees with his crops, he’s able to conserve the soil, retain moisture, and enrich the ground with organic matter. The compost manure he makes on-site, he says, performs way better than the expensive, store-bought options.

He credits ADS Western for walking with him on this journey. Through their training sessions, provision of farm tools, and the introduction of vertical garden bags, Papa feels empowered to farm smarter and live healthier. The support, he says, has not just equipped him with tools but with a mindset that values self-sufficiency and community.

Looking at Papa’s farm, you realize that African Leafy Vegetables are not a thing of the past. They are Africa’s solution to healthier families, sustainable farming, and preserving culinary traditions. They require little water, resist pests, and thrive with minimal inputs, making them perfect for smallholder farmers facing the challenges of climate change.
