Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is the most farmed fish species and the favourite fish food for most farmers and consumers. Tilapia can be grown in a wide range of ecosystems and culture systems, but the main ones are ponds and cages. The versatile and tolerant nature of tilapia in various aquaculture environments makes it the most preferred species; it can be farmed in slightly salty water and pond or cage systems. As an omnivorous animal, tilapia eats diets composed of both animals, vegetables, and algae. The farmers should always make sure that they are farming Nile tilapia and not any other tilapia. Aquaculture is farming aquatic organisms in freshwater, seawater, or brackish water. Kenya has great potential for commercial aquaculture to fill the gap in the national fish supply due to the declining wild-caught fish from rivers and lakes. Aquaculture provides food security and employment opportunities and reduces poverty among households. Tilapia is the leading fish in aquaculture.
